Adam Fuss is a contemporary photographer but with a very unconventional technique as he does not use a camera in any of his work. His best known images are Photograms of babies on their back in shallow baths of water with ripples and droplets in the water to show the movement of the baby.
Adam makes these photograms to go back to his childhood memories, he tries to capture the baby's personality through their movement. His work is realistic but is also partly planned/posed but as he cant control the baby's movements the photogram is not completely set-up.
This photogram fits into a few different themes; portraiture, movement and light and the five senses. The five senses is the starting point that I have chosen to work with and help to develop my ideas, this relates to that theme as it is of a human body.
The process to make this is done in the Darkroom, the artist done this by placing a baby into a shallow bath of water on top of a piece of photographic paper he then exposes it to light for a few seconds.
This photograph shows movement with the ripples in the water, this makes the image more interesting to look at and gives it more meaning and texture.
This photogram is an outline/silhouette of a baby taken from above, it has been framed with the baby, the only subject, centred in the frame.
I like this piece of work because it is interesting to look at and not many photographers do not use a camera for their work. I also like the fact that he has managed to capture movement in a still image as it adds to the photogram.
My first thoughts of this was that it was a photograph and not a photogram, I didn't think much of it to start with but as I learnt more about it I liked it.
